MSC Poppe - Keo Nakama.JPG

In this 2022 file photo, Guam’s Israel Poppe races into first place in the 100m freestyle at the Keo Nakama Invitational swim meet in Hawaii. Poppe was awarded the first place high point trophy in the 15-16 boys for his outstanding performance in multiple events throughout the competition.

We have been catching up on the news about Manhoben Swim Club. It is so thrilling to see how far it has come since we started the team in 1978 with Frank Whitman and Joe and Cathy Uson as coaches and Jeff Burke as our only master swimmer.

We chose the name because we wanted the team to give the swimmers more say in their organization.

We wanted to attract more local talent and build the team we wanted for the 1979 South Pacific Games, which was very successful.

We could have never predicted that Guam would compete in the Olympics back when we started. Things have certainly changed.

Congratulations to all of Guam’s swimmers on your achievements.

Cathy Uson is a former resident of Guam and now lives in Anchorage, Alaska.

Congratulations to all those who are getting the youth involved in swimming. Learning how to swim is just as important as brushing teeth. While the shelf life of an Olympic swim athlete is short, it is packed with good things.
