SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — More than 24 hours after a shooting killed an 11-month-old baby and hurt two other girls, Syracuse Police detectives are desperate for people with information about what happened to come forward.

“Individuals like this should not be able to have any shelter in our community,” Syracuse Police Chief Kenton Buckner said in a briefing.

The baby, who police haven’t named, and two other girls, ages 4 and 8, were hit by gunfire into the back windows of the car they were riding in Syracuse’s Strathmore neighborhood, the chief and Onondaga County District Attorney tell NewsChannel 9.

“They rolled down their window just enough… shooting and shooting and shooting,” –– Shakema Buckmon, mother of two injured and driver of vehicle

In an interview with NewsChannel 9, the mother of the two girls who will recover, Shakema Buckmon, says the five of them were headed to the grocery store Sunday night.

She said, “I tried to save her. I tried. I tried to save my baby cousin. I tried to save her. But it was too late.”

The shooting happened on Grant Avenue, just a block from the intersection of Bellevue Avenue and South Geddes Street, just before 7 p.m. Sunday.

The neighborhood is adjacent to the old Shea Middle School and Bellevue Elementary School.

The three girls were riding in the backseats, while their mothers were in the front two seats.

“My cousins didn’t deserve this. We didn’t deserve this. We’re just regular people. We didn’t deserve this, like why? What is this for,” Buckmon asked.

“This is an unimaginable tragedy,” said Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh. “This tragedy is the definition of senseless. How could anyone in their right mind point a gun at a vehicle in broad daylight with children in it?”

One of the older girls was hit in the hip and the other was grazed by a bullet that came just inches from killing her, the DA says.

“It could have easily been two deaths or three,” says DA Bill Fitzpatrick. The two injured girls, sisters, are expected to recover from their injuries.

The victims continued driving and made it about a mile further at a relative’s home on Lincoln Avenue when they discovered their children were hurt.

The three girls were sent to Upstate Hospital where the baby later died.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Syracuse Police Department at (315) 442-5222. Calls can be kept confidential.
