Lizzo is celebrating her birthday on Saturday, and the singer has had quite a wild year.

The hitmaker turns 36 and probably hopes that this year will be better than the last one. Last year, she was hit with a harassment lawsuit and what followed was turbulent responses from the Good as Hell singer on Instagram and backlash from the internet.

Let's take a look back at the singer's year.

Toxic Harassment Lawsuit

Last summer, Lizzo was named in a lawsuit and was being sued by three former dancers over allegations of sexual harassment, racial and religious harassment and the creation of a hostile work environment between 2021 and 2023.

Lizzo was accused of pressuring one of the dancers to touch a nude dancer at a club in Amsterdam and verbally berated her dancers for their weight. Besides claiming that the singer harassed them, Lizzo's dance captain Shirlene Quigley was also named.

The singer denied all allegations, releasing a statement on social media. She wrote: "These last few days have been gut wrenchingly difficult and overwhelmingly disappointing. My work ethic, morals and respectfulness have been questioned. My character has been criticized. Usually I choose not to respond to false allegations but these are as unbelievable as they sound and too outrageous to not be addressed."

'Quitting Music'

At the end of March, Lizzo took to social media to post a statement that she was "tired of putting up with being dragged by everyone in my life and on the internet." It continued: "All I want is to make music and make people happy and help the world be a little better than how I found it. But I'm starting to feel like the world doesn't want me in it."

Her post ended with a peace sign emoji and the words: "My character being picked apart by people who don't know me and disrespecting my name. I didn't sign up for this s**t. I quit."

Days later, the singer posted a video message clarifying her "quitting" statement. She said: "I want to make this video because I just need to clarify. When I said 'I quit' I mean I quit giving any negative energy attention."

"What I'm not going to quit is the joy of my life, which is making music which is connecting to people," Lizzo continued, "And I know I'm not alone."

She added: "In no way shape or form am I the only person who is experiencing that negative voice that's seems to be louder than the positive. If I can just give one person the inspiration or motivation to stand up for themselves and say they quit letting negative people win, negative comments win, then I've done even more than I could've hoped for."

"With that being said I'm going to keep moving forward I'm going to keep being me," she ended the video, "Once again i just want to say thank you, the love that I received means more than you know."

Melissa's trauma

On April 15, Lizzo posted a lengthy essay on Tumblr. She referred to herself by her birth name, Melissa.

"Melissa hated her feelings. She buried them in a chest in the 5th grade (along with her ability to express them). Other peoples' feelings on the other hand was her forte. She could process, decipher and regurgitate other people's emotions effortlessly," she wrote.

The hitmaker then shared rules she lived by as a child: "1) Don't cry. 2) Stay neutral; Deescalate 3) Don't take anything personal. This isn't about you."

She continued: "Traumas began to compact on Melissa, as they do. Melissa began to fall for her feelings. Her feelings gave life purpose. They weren't always logical, as feelings seldom are. They were sloppy and embarrassing and rude and so fucking uncomfortable. But they were hers. And they were real."

"And when she sat alone sipping wine, staring at the moon...They were the only ones still by her side. Ready to break the rules for her because they loved her. And she finally loved them back," she finished.
